June 1st
Jane St. Art Center ✹ 11 Jane St. Suite A.
Saugerties on-site performance video “The Speak to Me” will be complete and installed at Jane St. Art Center. This is a site-specific piece that talks about our consumption. Suprina will be shooting May 1-8 with Rock Wilk, an incredible filmmaker also living in Poughkeepsie. Suprina will start her travels at the Saugerties Library, then move to the 15 Minutes of Frame, the Lighthouse, Arm of the Sea, and possibly Opus 40 and other sites while wearing her plastic bag outfit. As she travels from one place to the next she comes upon different “objects”; that have been left behind, abandoned or castaway. These objects ’talk’ to her, they tell her their stories…. Who owned them, when they were purchased and why they were left behind. As each tells her their story, she picks them up and places them into her broken (also a discarded object) red wagon. After visiting all these location’s, Suprina walks into her Silent Stories forest art installation at Jane Street Art Center to ‘plant’ her new found objects. This finished video will be on view at Jane St. Art Center from June 1 to June 22.

Outrageously fun collective Hazmat Modine, having just celebrated its 25th anniversary and the U.S. release of their latest album “Bonfire,” have developed a unique genre-fluid, musical language of a mythic America: tuba powered, harmonica inflected, Saxophone charged, trumpet riddled, trombone slathered, drum beat ravaged, fiddle broiled, guitar chiseled, and vocal sanctified. From New Orleans flavored jazz and Junk, Calypso, Balkanova, and Klezmer to Gypsy Jazz, Blues and African grooves Hazmat Modine creates “entirely original and intoxicating” grooves. Propelled by the earthy vocals and scorching harmonica of band founder Wade Schuman, the group’s unique sound is buoyed by sousaphone, drums, guitar, and banjo. The band has toured in more than 40 countries and performed with an eclectic assortment of musicians, from Kronos Quartet to Natalie Merchant. Doors open at 6pm. Join The Local for a new series with Barbès Brooklyn. Psychedelic cumbia band Chicha Libre’s Olivier Conan (also founder of Barbès Brooklyn) leads a new project Combo Daguerre, that performs original French tunes with a psychedelic edge and a mostly Latin crew. Its hybrid style is informed by boleros, cumbia, cha chas, 60's rock, French chanson and 1930s surrealism - and its music is filled with joy and darkness, deep grooves and dirges, nostalgia and futurism. Combo Daguerre could be seen as the francophone heir to Chicha Libre - and like its predecessor, the project owes much to New York city where cultural and linguistic borders are fluid and Pan-Latin influences can be found in every possible musical genre. Its songs deal with exile, misplaced nostalgia and a language adulterated by distance. Beer, wine, refreshments, snacks are available. ADA accessible. Doors open at 6 pm. Buy your tickets here.

Living far from any major metropolis, we enjoy skies that are a planetarium come-to-life! With no celestial knowledge, star charts or special equipment, we can each be swept away by the grandeur of the universe – if we simply know when and where to look. All the cool musicians are making tour movies, and Iron & Wine is no exception. Though the live show is drawn from a two night-stand at the historic Haw River Ballroom in Saxapahaw, North Carolina, the entirety of the film was shot over the course of three years. It seeks to clarify – or perhaps pay respect to – the alluring poetics of Iron & Wine’s frontman Sam Beam. Through interviews and casual, instinctive footage, Iron & Wine’s world becomes something we can experience wholly, just like Swifties and Beyoncé fans, through the magic of the movie screen.

Listen to this: For Lee “Scratch” Perry’s approval of this documentary, he requested that the filmmakers bring $5000 in a paper bag to a dinner with Perry’s ex-wives and children. This was all of course before his passing. Naturally, this should raise a few questions about the Grammy Award-winning Jamaican music star, and we cannot promise that this movie will answer any of them. However, we can surmise that eight days they spent interviewing the eccentric dub maverick was as electrifying as his style. Narrated by Benecio Del Toro, and made with a curious source of Argentinian trucking money, this movie is how Lee “Scratch” Perry sees Lee “Scratch” Perry. We wouldn’t want it any other way.
